What is Human and Organizational Performance? (HOP)

What is HOP? Rob Fisher, of Fisher Improvement Technologies shares his knowledge and insights on the subject of Human and Organizational Performance.

Hi, my name is Rob Fisher. I own a company called Fisher Improvement Technologies and for about the last 25 years, in one form or another, we’ve helped people understand how and why people make mistakes – especially mistakes that can prove to be catastrophic – and what you can do about them – whether you can mitigate the consequences, reduce the probability, or even sometimes prevent those mistakes or errors. I wanted to chat for just a minute about something called Human and Organizational Performance, better known as HOP. Everybody hears a lot about HOP these days, and I just want to explain a little bit about what it is, why it’s here, and what it might be able to do for you. Human and Organizational Performance, or HOP, is a science-based approach to understanding how and why people make these mistakes or errors and what you can do about them either as an organization or as an individual. We call it “HOP Done Right!” when Human and Organizational Performance goes beyond just the organization, or the system in the organization, so that you can use the same concepts, science, and language at home, at work and at play to prevent someone from getting hurt, maimed or killed; prevent a quality upset; or prevent you from having some kind of catastrophic outcome. Human and Organizational Performance came from the initial human factors that then went through Human Performance in the nuclear and airline industries, and now has been improved and has even moved to Advanced Error Reduction in Organizations (AERO). We are going to be coming online a lot of times to give you more information about Human an Organizational Performance, but I just wanted to introduce myself and the concept a little bit. If you want more information you can visit our website at improvewithfit.com. We’re going to be starting a series that you can come back here and continually revisit as needed on the Top Ten Deployment Errors related to Human and Organizational Performance. Come back and visit us about every week or two. Starting in March we are going to be talking about the problem that people tend to see with deployment and here’s some of the things that you can do about it to avoid those challenges. So, we’ll see you back here soon!
